Frequently
Asked
Questions
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy is a healthcare specialty focused on improving movement, relieving pain, restoring function, and preventing further injury through exercise, manual therapy, and education.
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
In many cases, you can visit a physical therapist directly without a doctor’s referral. This is dependent on your insurance plan. Most commercial insurances will allow direct access, seeing a physical without a physicians referral for 30days of care. Prescriptions are required for Medicare, workmen’s compensation, and auto cases must have a physicians prescription prior to being seen by a physical therapist.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first visit will include a detailed evaluation where the physical therapist will assess your medical history, current symptoms, and physical condition. A personalized treatment plan will then be created to address your specific needs. At streamline therapy we hope to include a treatment on the day of your initial evaluation. Please plan for your first visit to be about one hour.
What conditions do physical therapists treat?
Physical therapists can treat a wide range of conditions, including:
Sports injuries
Back, neck, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot and hand pain
Post-surgical rehabilitation
Joint pain or arthritis
Neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s)
Balance and gait issues
How long will my sessions last?
Most sessions last between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your treatment plan and progress.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for movement. Athletic shoes are also recommended.
Will physical therapy be painful?
Some treatments may cause mild discomfort, but physical therapy is designed to help you feel better over time. It is important to talk with your physical therapist about your symptoms so he/she can adjust their treatment appropriately and make modifications when needed. Discussing your symptoms post sessions can help your physical therapist better understand your condition and at times may change their treatment plans.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your condition, goals, and progress. Your physical therapist will provide an estimated timeline during your initial evaluation. You should expect to see a change of symptoms within two weeks of care.
Does insurance cover physical therapy?
Most insurance plans cover physical therapy, but coverage varies. We recommend contacting your insurance provider or our office for assistance in understanding your benefits.
Can physical therapy help prevent future injuries?
Yes, physical therapy focuses not only on recovery but also on strengthening and educating you to reduce the risk of future injuries.
